I Scream for Ice Cream

A very common sight in Mexico is the paletero (popsicle vendor). The paleteros here sell a wide variety of milk and water based paletas, which are quite tasty. They also sell little cups of ice cream. These are not so tasty! (Almost inedible.)

But fear not. Meet Chuy Nieves! (Not his real last name, but that's the last name my children have given him!) Chuy, delivers the most delicious, old-fashioned, homemade ice cream to our house DAILY!!! This type of ice cream is known as Nieve de Garrafa. Chuy's father churns 6 different flavors every morning. Some of the flavors available are lemon, vanilla, cookie, pineapple, strawberry, walnut, pistachio, cola, mamey, and coffee. But the most popular is coconut.

This ice cream is not only delicious, it's also easy on your pocket. The smallest serving costs 2 pesos. That's a mere 15 cents. If you're in the mood for a larger serving, perhaps to take home and share with the family, you can purchase a liter for 16 pesos. (That's about $1.23)

So if you're ever in my neighborhood, be sure to stop by around noon. The ice cream's on me!

With Love,
Leslie Limon

  1. We have noticed the differences in ice creams on the Pacific Coast of MX. Kids still love it but I am not so sure.
